Genetic Grip Q&A with Nick Bullen

Nick Bullen’s new signature Genetic Grips are in stores worldwide so we asked him a few questions about them, so you can know everything about them. Nick and some of the team guys have been running them for a while and are stoked! Check out some details, and a little behind the scene from Nick himself.

Tell us a little bit about the name and design and how that came about.
Signature grips are something I think you can put a lot of personal thought into, so that?s what I went for. I wanted the meaning behind the design to be relatable. I?ve always liked the classic ODI ring pattern?because the rings run with your fingers, so they?don?t rip as easily. So, I started?with the ring pattern and I wanted to implement a DNA strand into the design.?A DNA?strand is different for everyone and it identifies to each?person.?I put two thicker lines that weave together to?create a DNA strand?throughout the grip. I also put different zodiac signs in the flange design to relate to the idea of identity?and each person?s genetics that create them. Hence?the name Genetic.

The Genetic Grip measures in at 170mm, about 20mm longer than most, what made you want to do a longer grip?
I?ve always had to stretch my grips out.?But when you?stretch your grips out, the rubber weakens and it?s way easier to rip them or tare them upon impact.?I?ve never liked the length of most grips?because when I caught barspins I would end up with my thumb?and index finger on the bar. This?happened often when I rode?flange-less grips as well. So, I measured the?length of the stretched grips I liked and added about 5mm more.?

What was the idea behind the smaller grip flange?
Flanges help me aim for my grips when I do barspins. I rode flange-less forever; I really don?t remember having grips with flanges until about 3-4 years ago. I learned barspins with brakes, it taught me to catch the grip and lever proper. After I went brakeless I seemed to start catching barspins sloppier and sloppier. I didn’t like brakes, so I thought keeping the flanges on my grips might help for once. It definitely helped so I always kept the flanges on. After a while I started to modify the flange because I didn?t like how big the diameter was. There was just too much material in my opinion.?
?
The team guys who are running them all love them, is this something you?ve thought about for a while?
I never really thought about designing a personal grip. More so always thought about the few modifications I made like the smaller flange and length. So, once the idea of a signature grip came about, it took me some time to come up with a design I was stoked on. ??
?
So this is your second signature product with Subrosa. Where you stoked on the response that your Pizza Seat got?
I was absolutely blown away! I can?t thank all the pizza lovers enough for the love!
?
